Pipeline Abatement & Painting

The Red Hill Fuel Storage Facility has capacity to store more than 10 million gallons of fuel for the Navy’s Pacific Fleet and the Air Force at Hickam AFB. Constructed during WWII, the fuel facility plays an active role in keeping America’s Navy Fit and ready to fight. The fuel Storage tanks are more than 20 stories tall and more than 175’ in diameter. Tunnels located at the top and bottom of the tanks provide access for workers to maintain the facility and to monitor the transfer of fuel. A train track on the access way provides material access for heavy valves and pipe sections.

The lower tunnel contains pipelines that carry fuel to Pearl Harbor’s ships and from Fuel Tankers to the storage facility. Several Repair & Maintenance Jobs keep the fuel lines well maintained. Since preventing water from entering the tunnel has been a problem, damp conditions exist which ultimately wears on the pipe surfaces. This project is the second project that was let to repair pipe sections and to recoat piping with epoxy coating.

The NAKOA Companies, Inc. was the prime subcontractor on this project to VECO Federal who was recently acquired by CH2MHill. VECO provided the NACE Inspector who performed the Quality Contol and project management for the project.
